Introduction
Considering the growing population of Navi Mumbai and the anticipated future demand for public transport, CIDCO has envisaged developing metro rail corridors in Navi Mumbai in addition to the suburban rail system and bus based public transport system so as to establish better North-South and East-West connectivity between all the residential nodes and to improve connectivity with Mumbai's transportation system.

For this purpose, Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) was entrusted with the task of conducting feasibility study. DMRC proposed connectivity by Metro Rail System due to various merits on account of it being energy efficient, pollution free and occupying less land space as compared to other modes of transport. DMRC proposed six metro corridors in Navi Mumbai, out of these Uran-Ranjanpada-Nerul and Ranjanpada-Kharkopar-Seawoods which were earlier considered as metro corridors have now been retained as suburban railway corridors.

Based on these recommendations of DMRC, the following FIVE Metro Rail Corridors have been finalized for development in phases.

The DMRC has submitted the Detailed Master Plan for Line I and accordingly, the corridor of Belapur – Khandeshwar – Navi Mumbai International Airport is planned to be developed in 3 phases: Belapur to Pendhar in the 1st Phase, MIDC to Khandeshwar as 2nd Phase & interlink between Pendhar & MIDC in 3rd Phase.

Government of Maharashtra has authorized CIDCO as MRT system administration Implementing Agency under Indian Tramway Act 1886 for implementation of Belapur-Pendhar-Kalamboli-Khandeshwar Metro Rail Project on September 30, 2010.

The Line - I corridor is proposed to be developed as follows:

The Corporation has decided that the Belapur-Taloje-Khandeshwar Corridor Metro Rail project will be executed with CIDCO's funds and accordingly the work of the phase I has been awarded. The ground breaking ceremony of Line 1 was performed at the hands of Hon'ble Chief Minister, Govt. of Maharashtra on 1st May, 2011, and the construction work is in progress.

Execution of Line 2 & 3 of corridor 1 is proposed to be taken up shortly so that the Metro Line of corridor 1 is completed, along with the completion of proposed airport at Navi Mumbai in the next 5 years while it is expected that line 2 and Line 3 will be completed by 2015 and 2016, respectively.
