Railway Project

If anything can be called the lifeline of Navi Mumbai, it's the city's suburban railway network. It's a unique rail project involving CIDCO and Indian Railways, with CIDCO and Railways sharing the expenditure on a ratio of 67:33. Covering a length of 200 km and occupying 900 hectares of land, the network is planned with 6 separate corridors and 30 stations.

The 6 rail corridors in Navi Mumbai are:

1. Mankhurd-Belapur-Panvel (29 km corridor connecting
    Mumbai to Navi Mumbai) (commissioned)

2. Thane-Turbhe-Nerul / Vashi (23 km corridor connecting
    Thane to Navi Mumbai)

3. Kalwa-Turbhe (goods line commissioned)

4. Belapur / Nerul-Uran (work in progress)

5. Mansarovar-Taloja (planned)

6. Panvel-Uran (planned)

Direct access from residential to railway station by foot, convenient interchange facility from one corridor to another, double discharge platforms at every station, easy to follow routes, and comfortable and pleasant journeys form the key features of the commuter railway system in Navi Mumbai.

Mankhurd - Belapur - Panvel Railway Corridor

The Mankhurd - Belapur - Panvel rail corridor connects Navi Mumbai with Mumbai and was commissioned - upto Vashi in May 1992; upto Nerul in Feb 1993; up-to Belapur in June 1993; CST to Panvel (Single Line) Commuter Rail Service was commissioned on 29th June, 1998 and double line on 14th April, 2000. This corridor is 29 km in length and consists of 9 Stations, 9 ROB's and 1 RUB (Road Under Bridge) and 1 Tunnel (near CBD Belapur Station) and is one of the cornerstone in the development of Navi Mumbai.

Thane - Turbhe - Nerul/Vashi Railway Corridor

The Thane - Turbhe - Nerul/Vashi rail corridor connects Thane with Navi Mumbai and is 23 kms long; the corridor's construction commenced on October 1995 and was fully commissioned for commuter traffic on 9.11.2004. The corridor consists of 10 stations and has three major ROB's which are: Turbhe Link Road that connects Thane-Vashi-Nerul via Road; Khairane ROB near DAKC; and the Mahape ROB.

Belapur / Nerul- Seawood - Uran Railway Corridor

The Railway Project between Nerul and Belapur - Seawood - Uran was approved by Ministry of Railways and CIDCO Board and the work on the project began in July 1997. However, due to various unforeseen reasons, the work was delayed and hence stalled, until recently when the project was revived after the tripartite agreement between Railways, CIDCO and Govt. of Maharashtra was executed on 29.07.2011. The total length of the corridor is 27 km and consists of 10 stations; 4 major bridges; 5 ROBs; Provisions are made for one arm of the railway line to go to Belapur station from Sagarsangam (Kille).

Vashi Railway Bridge

The Vashi Railway Bridge is the connecting link between Mumbai and Navi Mumbai, connecting both the twin cities and is a major influence in the commercial development of Navi Mumbai and to an extent that of Mumbai. The bridge over the Thane Creek helped the inhabitants of Navi Mumbai to commute to Mumbai for work and was a major reason for people to come to Navi Mumbai for residential purposes. All in all, the Vashi Bridge essentially proved to be a vital catalyst in Navi Mumbai's development.

Railway Stations

When business is concentrated around a station which is a trademark scenario around major Railway Stations in India. Navi Mumbai had something totally innovative to offer. CIDCO, by converting the space above the railway station into a commercial complex, redefined architectural innovation and took it a step further. CIDCO has pioneered the concept of the 'railway station cum commercial complex' in Navi Mumbai. State-of-the-art offices and commercial facilities occupied air space above railway stations in this groundbreaking concept. It not only gave a new dimension to an otherwise routine architecture, but has also generated employment opportunities, resulting in massive growth centre's around the city, such as the ITC and IIP in CBD Belapur and Vashi respectively.

With the involvement of prominent architects in designing the projects, CIDCO used the latest construction technology available to ensure that these railway complexes in Navi Mumbai become modern architectural marvels. Railway Stations - The Commercial Enclave of Navi Mumbai!
